KIU Student Found Dead in Suspected Suicide, Police Investigate

A somber mood has gripped Kampala International University (KIU) in Ishaka, Bushenyi District, after the body of a 20-year-old student was discovered hanging from a tree near the male hostels in what police suspect to be a suicide.

The grim discovery was made early Friday morning by a university security guard during routine patrols. Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson, Apollo Tayebwa, confirmed that the deceased, identified as John Lukoma, was found suspended from an avocado tree adjacent to the male students’ toilets.

“The security guard reported the incident to us immediately, and we have since opened an investigation,” Tayebwa said. The body was later taken to KIU Teaching Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination, with authorities promising to release findings in due course.

Financial Struggles Cited as Possible Trigger

Lukoma’s roommate, Patrick Okoume, revealed that the young student had been battling overwhelming stress over unpaid tuition and basic upkeep. “He was deeply troubled about whether he would even complete his studies. This may have pushed him to take such a drastic step,” Okoume shared, his voice heavy with grief.

Police spokesperson Tayebwa used the tragic incident to urge students and the public to seek help when facing emotional distress. “Suicide is never the answer. There are people and services ready to support anyone going through tough times,” he emphasized.

University Appeals for Calm, Offers Counseling

While KIU administration refrained from direct comments, an internal letter circulated among students urged them to lean on available counseling services. “Whether you knew John or not, this loss affects us all. You are not alone—reach out, we are here for you,” the message read, acknowledging the shock and grief rippling through the campus.

The incident has reignited discussions on mental health awareness among university students, particularly the pressures of financial instability and academic stress. As investigations continue, the community mourns a life cut short, hoping the tragedy sparks greater support for those silently struggling.
