Kampala – Uganda
The National Unity Platform (NUP) has chosen Florence Asio as its new candidate for the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament seat.
This comes after the party’s original candidate, Mercy Alupo, was suddenly removed from the national voters’ register. NUP says this happened in a suspicious and unfair way, which they believe was politically motivated.
According to the chairperson of NUP’s election committee, Harriet Chemuntai,, the party faced many challenges in Bukedea. She said powerful people in the district tried to stop Alupo from running, including Anita Among, the current MP and Speaker of Parliament.
“Mercy Alupo was blocked at every turn. We had no choice but to bring in Florence Asio, who is strong and ready to serve the people,” Chemuntai said.
Florence Asio is a local leader who has worked with the community for many years. NUP believes she is the right person to represent the people of Bukedea and fight for their needs in Parliament.
The by-election is expected to be closely watched, especially with these serious claims of political interference. But NUP says they are ready to continue the fight for fairness and change in Bukedea.
