Kenyan Senior Counsel Martha Karua joined Ugandan opposition leaders today at the High Court in Kampala, where proceedings against veteran opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye were set to begin.
Karua, a former justice minister, stood with lawyers and politicians including, Francis Mwijukye , Erias Lukwago, Ambassador Wasswa Biriggwa and Hon. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda in a show of solidarity.
Besigye and his associate Obeid Lutale were controversially arrested in Nairobi last November and extradited to Uganda, where they now face treason charges. Their earlier trial in a military court was quashed by a Supreme Court ruling that barred the army from prosecuting civilians.
Observers say Karua’s presence underscores growing cross-border support for Besigye, with the case carrying major political and legal implications for Uganda’s opposition.
