Makindye, Kampala
Tension gripped Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on today after a visibly frail Bryan Kirumira, popularly known as Bryan White, was wheeled into the Chief Magistrate’s chambers to face charges of human sacrifice and manslaughter.
Kirumira, once a flamboyant Kampala socialite, appeared weak and was transported on a wheelchair under heavy police escort. His arrival drew crowds of onlookers, journalists, and supporters hoping to witness the high-profile proceedings.
However, the media was left stunned when the Chief Magistrate, Ms. Sarah Basemera, abruptly blocked all journalists from entering her chambers. In a dramatic turn, she locked herself inside with Kirumira, several police officers, and the father of the deceased woman shutting out the press entirely.
Outside the chamber door, journalists protested the unusual restriction, insisting the case was of public interest. Court officials offered no explanation for the decision, fueling speculation and unease in the corridors.
The charges stem from the death of a 25-year-old woman who reportedly died at Kirumira’s residence under unclear circumstances. Police investigations led to the socialite’s arrest, followed by yesterday’s tightly controlled court appearance.
Inside the closed-door session, the magistrate reportedly read out the charges, though details of what transpired remain unknown due to the media blackout.
Kirumira’s defense team did not address reporters, and police whisked him away shortly after the session, leaving many questions unanswered.
The court is expected to announce the next steps in the case once preliminary procedures are complete. Meanwhile, public debate continues to intensify, with many Ugandans demanding transparency in a case involving one of the city’s most controversial public figures.
