The Supreme Court has granted permission to Robert Kasibante to withdraw the election petition he had filed challenging the victory of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the recent presidential election held on the 15th of last month.

Kasibante, who was among the eight candidates that contested for the presidency, finished in seventh place. He had initially petitioned the court, arguing against the validity of Museveni’s win. However, in a ruling delivered today, the court confirmed that Kasibante is free to withdraw his case, effectively ending his challenge.

The petition was one of several legal actions filed after the election, reflecting dissatisfaction among some candidates with the outcome. Kasibante’s withdrawal reduces the number of active challenges against Museveni’s victory, which had already been declared by the Electoral Commission.

Legal analysts note that the withdrawal simplifies the post-election legal landscape, leaving fewer disputes for the courts to resolve. It also reinforces the standing of Museveni’s declared win, as one of the challengers has formally stepped back from contesting it.

Kasibante has not publicly detailed his reasons for withdrawing the petition, but the court’s acceptance of his request marks the end of his legal pursuit in this matter.
