The Anti-Corruption Court has sentenced Ateng Francis, formerPrinciple Assistant Secretary ath the ministry of Lands Lira Zonal Offices  to three years in prison after finding him guilty of abuse of office, forgery, conspiracy to commit a felony, and related charges.

According to court findings, the offences were committed in 2018, when Ateng conspired with several accomplices to fraudulently acquire land belonging to the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC). Prosecutors demonstrated that Ateng manipulated the land registration system and unlawfully issued a land title for the URC property, which was later sold.

The scheme involved forging the signature of the then Managing Director of Uganda Railways Corporation, enabling the illegal transfer and disposal of the land. One of Ateng’s accomplices had earlier pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced to two years in prison, bolstering the case against him.

The arrests and prosecution followed a directive from President Yoweri Museveni, instructing the State House Anti – Corruption Unit to work jointly with the Police Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to investigate allegations of corruption and irregularities within the Uganda Railways Corporation.

Ateng’s conviction marks another significant step in ongoing efforts to curb corruption and protect public assets within government institutions.
