Kampala, Uganda
Several shops in downtown Kampala were submerged on Friday morning following heavy rains that caused flooding in the city’s central business district.
Traders operating around Nakivubo Channel say the recurring floods have once again destroyed their merchandise, with some estimating losses in the billions of shillings. Many accused city authorities of failing to implement lasting solutions despite repeated complaints and promises.
“This happens almost every time it rains heavily. Our goods are damaged, and no one is held accountable,” said one trader near Kikuubo, one of Kampala’s busiest commercial streets.
The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has previously attributed the flooding to blocked drainage systems, poor waste disposal, and encroachment on wetlands. However, traders argue that the city’s drainage infrastructure remains inadequate to handle the increasing runoff from new developments.
Residents and business owners are now urging authorities to desilt Nakivubo Channel, enforce better drainage management, and provide compensation or relief for those affected.
