A wave of frustration swept through downtown Kampala today as city traders closed their shops in protest against what they describe as relentless and unpredictable taxation. The demonstration, which disrupted business across major commercial streets, was aimed at drawing attention to the Uganda Revenue Authority’s (URA) alleged practice of imposing taxes on a near-daily basis.
Traders say the constant demands have crippled their operations, leaving little room for profit or growth. Many voiced concerns that the tax system lacks transparency and consistency, making it difficult to plan or sustain their businesses.
“We’re being taxed every single day, and it’s killing our businesses,” one trader lamented. “We’re not against paying taxes—we just want fairness and predictability.”
The protest highlights growing tension between small business owners and tax authorities, with traders calling for urgent reforms to ease the financial strain and restore confidence in the system.
