Kampala, Uganda
The High Court has ruled that Molly Katanga, widow of businessman Henry Katanga, together with four co-accused, must stand trial on charges of murder.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Rosette Comfort Kania said the prosecution had presented enough evidence to require the accused to defend themselves. The decision marks a significant turning point in a case that has captured national attention due to the Katanga family’s prominence and the seriousness of the allegations.
The five individuals ordered to stand trial are, widow of the deceased businessman Molly Katanga, daughters of Henry Katanga,Patricia Kawanza and Martha Nkwazi, a household worker George Amanyire and a medical practitioner Dr. Charles Otai.
All five were charged following the death of Henry Katanga in November 2023, under circumstances prosecutors allege point to foul play.
Justice Kania emphasized that the ruling does not amount to a conviction but establishes that the prosecution has made out a prima facie case. This means the accused must now respond to the charges, present their defense, and challenge the evidence brought against them.
“The court finds that the prosecution has made out a case requiring the accused persons to defend themselves,” Justice Kania stated.
The trial now moves into the defense stage. The accused are scheduled to begin presenting their case on 26th March 2026, a phase expected to be pivotal in determining whether the prosecution’s claims can withstand scrutiny.
Legal analysts say this stage will be closely watched, as it may reveal new details about the circumstances surrounding Katanga’s death and the role of those accused.
The case has drawn intense public and media attention, not only because of the Katanga family’s business and social standing but also because of the unusual involvement of family members and close associates in the charges.
With the defense set to begin soon, the trial is expected to remain in the spotlight, as Ugandans await answers in one of the country’s most high-profile legal battles.
