President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and his wife, Janet Museveni, have registered to renew their national identity cards.
Currently, the government is in the process of renewing national identity cards for Ugandans whose cards are about to expire, as well as those that have already expired.

Renewing national identity cards in Uganda has several important implications:

  1. Continued Access to Services – A valid national ID is required for essential services like banking, voting, and government programs.
  2. Legal Compliance – The renewal ensures compliance with Uganda’s Registration of Persons Act, which mandates that IDs remain valid for 10 years.
  3. Updated Information – Citizens can correct errors or update details such as names, residence, and parentage during the renewal process.
  4. Security Enhancements – The new IDs may include improved security features, potentially incorporating biometric updates.
  5. Avoiding Penalties – Delays in renewal could lead to difficulties in accessing services or penalties for expired IDs.
  6. Streamlined Identification – The renewal process helps maintain an accurate national registry, reducing fraud and identity misuse.
