President Muhammadu Buhari passed away in London on Sunday at around 4:30pm local time (15:30 GMT), following a long battle with illness, according to an official statement shared by President Bola Tinubu’s spokesperson on X.

In 2015, Buhari etched his name into Nigerian political history as the first opposition candidate in the country’s modern era to defeat a sitting president—Goodluck Jonathan—in an election hailed for its credibility and democratic significance.

A retired major general, Buhari initially assumed leadership in the 1980s after orchestrating a military coup. Years later, he transitioned to civilian politics, reshaping his public persona with flowing kaftans and calling himself a “converted democrat.”

Renowned for his stern demeanor and uncompromising stance on corruption, Buhari cultivated an image as a reform-minded leader. His declaration—“I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody”—was often interpreted as an effort to distance himself from entrenched political loyalties and signal a broader vision for governance.
