The Kawempe Magistrate’s Court in Kanyanya has charged Olivia Lutaaya, a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), with unlawful drilling at the party’s headquarters. Lutaaya appeared before the court earlier today and was remanded until November 18, 2025, as investigations into the matter continue.

Lutaaya has been added to an existing case file that already includes several prominent NUP figures, among them Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the party’s spokesperson, and Edward Ssebuufu, popularly known as Eddie Mutwe, along with other NUP members.

Prosecution alleges that the accused engaged in unauthorized drilling activities at the NUP offices, an act said to contravene environmental and construction regulations. The details of the alleged incident remain unclear, but the charges have sparked widespread public debate and online discussion, particularly among NUP supporters who view the move as part of a continued crackdown on opposition activities.

During the brief court session, Lutaaya did not enter a plea, and the magistrate ordered her to be remanded as the case file is reviewed. Defense lawyers have indicated their intention to apply for bail when the matter returns to court next week.

Outside the courtroom, several NUP supporters gathered to show solidarity with the accused, chanting party slogans and calling for her release.

The National Unity Platform, led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), has yet to issue an official statement, but senior party members have described the case as “politically motivated.”
