Kawempe – Uganda

26th November 2025

The Kanyanya Magistrates Court has released twelve supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) who were arrested earlier in the beginning of this  week in Kawempe. The group, apprehended on Monday, appeared before court to face charges that include inciting violence and attacking police officers.

The suspects were each granted cash bail of 200,000 shillings, while their sureties were bonded at 1 million shillings non-cash. Relatives and supporters who turned up at court expressed relief as the group regained temporary freedom after spending days in detention.

According to the prosecution, the accused participated in acts that allegedly involved “inciting members of the public” and engaging in confrontation with security personnel. The suspects, however, maintain that they were peacefully mobilizing for their political activities when they were forcefully arrested.
