Jack Dorsey Unveils Bitchat: A Messaging App That Doesn’t Need WiFi or Cell Service

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has introduced Bitchat, a new peer-to-peer messaging platform that bypasses traditional networks entirely. Instead of relying on WiFi or mobile data, Bitchat uses Bluetooth to enable communication—making it ideal for environments like protests, music festivals, or remote areas where connectivity is unreliable or restricted.

While Bluetooth typically supports connections up to about 100 meters, Bitchat uses a Bluetooth mesh network to extend its reach. Messages are relayed device-to-device across nearby users, forming a decentralized and resilient system.

Privacy is built into the core of the app. According to its official white paper, Bitchat is fully encrypted and does not require any personal identifiers like an email, phone number, or account to use. The paper emphasizes its purpose: “Bitchat addresses the need for resilient, private communication that doesn’t depend on centralized infrastructure.”
